John 12:3: “Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.“
There is something profound, I think the Lord wants us to see here. John is the only one that tells us after Mary had poured that costly oil of spikenard on Jesus, she then wiped His feet with the hair of her head. I don’t believe that anyone could discount Mary’s act as not being an act of adoration.
Paul once wrote that I might know Him and is this not the goal of every born-again Christian? To not just know about Him, but to truly know Him!
Mary’s action signified that she understood that Jesus had to go to the cross and die, but then people in Jesus’ day anointed the body after a person had died, not before. I believe Mary understood that it had been revealed to her, that Yes, Jesus would die, but that He would resurrect, and His body would not see decomposition.
So, how did she know and how was this revealed to her? It is something that I believe we have missed. It is that adoration leads to revelation. Let me say it again adoration leads to revelation!
The Lord will begin to show us things that we know not of when we sincerely worship Him. He looks into our heart to see if we are sincere.
There are other examples of this in the book of Luke, Simeon in Luke 2. The Bible tells us that Simeon was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel and the Holy Spirit was upon Him. Why was it that most people in Israel did not recognize who Jesus was? But Simeon did! He even said “He took Him (the baby Jesus) up in his arms and said Lord now you are letting your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes, have seen Your Salvation.
Then in the same chapter of Luke, Anna, who the Bible says was a prophetess and did not depart from the temple but served God with fasting and praying night and day. She gave thanks for Jesus.
These two people were shown revelation of who the Lord was and what He was about to do. Why were they privileged that God would show them things when everyone else missed Jesus? When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, He was offering Israel the true king. The people were singing and rejoicing and exclaiming “blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord”. The religious leaders actually came out and told them to be quiet and that they were trying to have religious services. Your trying to be religious and God is passing by your door and you missed Him!
How many are like that today? So busy being religious, so busy with life that the sweet things of the Lord we miss? C.S. Lewis once said, “we are like children who would rather play in a mud hole than have a day at the beach”.
Pastor Lee Cruse, who hopes that we would adhere and understand that Adoration or Devotion leads to Revelation. May we worship the Lord Almighty, the Lord Jesus Christ the Kings of Kings and Lord of Lords.
