Matthew 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. As I write my Pastor’s Corner on this Father’s Day I went looking for someone that would be an inspiration to all the Fathers in the church. I looked at many great men, but some times I believe that those Fathers who are behind the scenes and just are faithful need a closer look. Maybe they have not written a best seller, or climbed the highest peaks, or done extraordinary things. For many children the title that they love the best is the title of Dad. For me I don’t believe that there was ever a time that I didn’t look up to my Dad. He only had an 8th grade education, but was one of the smartest men that I ever knew. He was a World War II Veteran and was decorated. He was wounded in the Pacific but never talked about it. He ran a successful business for over 40 years and many tried to emulate what my Father did. He worked so hard and those times when I was involved in sports I appreciate looking up and seeing my Dad setting in the stands. He has gone on to Heaven and I look forward soon to see him again. I miss him and He was 95 when the Lord called him home. Now when I was looking for exceptional men to use as examples for Fathers, I could have picked out several men, but then I got to thinking about Joseph. He seemed to be a man always standing behind the scene and yet Joseph was an extraordinary man. I think when we get to heaven we will be surprised to find that those who God honors, just did their job and stayed faithful. Joseph was surely one of the most underrated fathers in the Bible. He was the foster father of Jesus Christ, what a position. He went through great difficulty to protect his wife Mary and their baby and then met Jesus’s education and other needs as he was growing up. Joseph taught Jesus the carpentry trade. The Bible calls Joseph a righteous man, and Jesus must have loved his guardian for his quiet strength, his honest, and kindness. We don’t know much about Joseph the last time the scriptures mention him, Jesus was 12 years old. Joseph must have had his heart broken when the news came to him that Mary was pregnant. But he was a man who trusted the Lord and the Lord repaid him for an angel came and explained to him why Mary was pregnant . Now we know that God chose Mary to be the Mother of His Son. But while that is true we must also realize that the Lord also choose Joseph to be the step father to Jesus. If you have a Father that is faithful and loves the Lord then count yourself as one of the wealthiest people in the world. Today we honor Fathers who are trying to do the best job they can but trusting in the Lord. Pastor Lee Cruse who hopes on this Father’s Day if your Dad is still alive that you will go to him and tell him how much you appreciate Him. Maybe some have had a father that did not have these attributes. May I say then look to your Heavenly Father who loves you more than any earthly father ever could and He wants you to draw near to Him just because He wants you to spend time with Him.
